Joliet Junior College
The nation’s first public community college,
offers pre-baccalaureate programs for students planning to transfer
to a four-year university. A comprehensive community college, JJC
provides occupational education leading directly to employment,
adult education and literacy programs, workforce development services,
and student support services.
History
America's first public community college
began in 1901 as an experimental postgraduate high school program.
It was the "brain child" of
J. Stanley Brown, Superintendent of Joliet Township High School,
and William Rainey Harper, President of the University of Chicago.
The college's initial enrollment was six students. Today, JJC
serves more than 35,000 students in credit classes and noncredit
courses.
Academics
JJC offers a wide range of degrees and certificates for students
studying in an occupational field and wanting to obtain a job in
their field of choice in two years or less. Those students who
wish to continue their education at a four-year institution will
find they can complete the first two years of coursework and save
a substantial amount of money. Studies have shown that JJC students
typically do as well as or better than students who spend their
first two years at a four-year college or university.
Joliet Junior College has a strong commitment to providing students
with a quality, accessible and affordable teaching and learning
environment. Strong academic programs are supported by quality
faculty members. Over 80 percent of JJC professors have a master's
degree or higher, and all JJC classes are taught by instructors
not by teaching assistants.
