Illinois State University: The place to pursue your passion
by Susan Marquardt Blystone

Illinois State University in Normal is home to approximately 20,000 students enrolled in programs that have grown extensively since the University was founded on February 18, 1857, as the first public institution of higher education in the state.

ISU has since developed into a multipurpose university with degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Its 34 academic departments offer more than 160 programs of study in six colleges. Programs in education, business, sciences, fine arts, nursing, and applied sciences have earned national distinction and international praise.

From studying abroad to leadership training, Illinois State has challenging opportunities that give graduates a competitive advantage. Students especially appreciate the University’s outstanding faculty, who make a personal connection.

Nearly 90 percent of undergraduate classes are taught by faculty members, and the student-faculty ratio is 19 to 1. Most of the 1,136 faculty members hold the highest degrees in their field. Many are recognized at national and international levels for their dedication to superior teaching.

Some of the most memorable moments come through residence hall life. Illinois State houses more than 6,000 students with diverse backgrounds and cultures. Illinois State also has more than 300 Registered Student Organizations, and an active Greek life. Students choose from 18 social fraternities and 15 social sororities.
Students come together as Redbird fans as well, cheering the University’s 19 teams. A Division I institution, Illinois State has one of the largest Athletics programs in the Midwest. It’s also one of the most successful, with 133 league titles since 1982.

Many students stay active themselves by getting involved in one of the University’s recreational programs. The Student Fitness and Kinesiology and Recreation Building will be another popular destination. The new $50 million facility is nearing completion.

With a population of 150,000, Bloomington-Normal offers students plenty of options for shopping and entertainment as well. Transportation is not a problem, as students ride the bus for free.

It’s not hard to head back home either. ISU sits near three interstates. An Amtrak station is just blocks away, a charter bus system runs from the campus, and there is a regional airport in Bloomington-Normal.

From convenience to caring, Illinois State empowers students to pursue their passion. That fact is evident from the more than 170,000 alumni living across the country, and making a difference by working around the world.
